Linungao Islands are located in Tandag City in Surigao del Sur, Philippines. The islands are connected to the main part of the city. Both islands have different beauty and I will share how you can enjoy each.

Wild Monkeys in Linungao Islands, Tandag City

Tandag City is my hometown and I recently spent two weeks there with my family. During this time, I had the opportunity to visit the monkeys.

These monkeys have been on the island for a long time. All I knew before, the monkeys would come to the nearby houses looking for food. However, since the construction of a new dike beside the island, we can now visit and see them up close.

Although this is not yet an official tourist spot, locals sometimes visit to watch the monkeys. Nonetheless, I am happy to experience this in my own hometown.

Meet the Wild Monkeys

One of the unique attractions of Linungao Island is its population of long-tailed macaques. These fascinating creatures can often be seen in the morning (around 6 AM) and late afternoon (around 5 PM) when they descend from the trees looking for food. The monkeys are a delight to watch as they interact with each other and their environment, providing an extraordinary opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitat.

For now, watching the monkeys is free. So please observe proper etiquette.

Care and Interaction

The monkeys of Linungao Island are well cared for by some of the local residents, who sometimes give the monkeys food to eat. While the monkeys are accustomed to human presence, it’s essential to follow certain guidelines to ensure both visitor and animal safety:

  • Do Not Feed the Monkeys: Visitors are discouraged from feeding the monkeys directly. These are wild animals, and feeding them can lead to aggressive behavior or dependence on human-provided food.
  • Seek Local Guidance: If locals are feeding the monkeys, it’s best to ask for their assistance in interacting with the animals. They can provide valuable advice on how to observe and enjoy the monkeys safely.
  • Appropriate Food: If you plan to bring food for the monkeys like bananas or bread, otherwise consult with local residents on what is suitable to ensure it does not harm the animals.

Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine (Tandag Grotto)

Another thing to do in Linungao Island is to visit the Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine, also known as Tandag Grotto. Located on one of the Linungao Islands, this 70-step Grotto offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of Tandag City. It’s an ideal spot for a peaceful walking or short hiking trip. As you ascend the steps, you can enjoy the tranquility and panoramic vistas surrounding you.

The path winding through the island provides a unique perspective of another side of the city and leads to Danakit Cave, adding an element of adventure to your visit. The Grotto and its surroundings are perfect for those seeking a spiritual experience or simply wishing to enjoy the island’s natural beauty from a different point of view.
